The club held an end of season party at Zeitoun restaurant, sponsor of our Women’s XI, on Saturday the 5th October. Over 60 parents, players and partners attended and it was a fantastic way to celebrate another successful season for the club.
Thank you very much to Iona Dizon, James Murray and the social team for organising the event. It’s already been described as one of the great Claygate nights!
The club is wholly dependent on volunteers, which is often forgotten but critically important, so we also wanted to say a massive thank you to the 40+ volunteers across all sections of the club.
The focus of the night was on having a fun and informal evening but we took the opportunity to present the club awards. Well done to the winners…well except for the Mallard!
The Mallard
The Mallard is awarded to the player with the most number of ducks in the season. Scott Labacik, regular winner of the Mallard, only did enough for second place with his 5 ducks. The winner with 6 ducks in his 26 games was Ariv Singh.
Best junior in adult cricket
The cup is presented to a member of the junior age group teams who performed well in the adult teams. A few players stood out, including Charlie Francis and Charlie Jonkergouw with the award going to Tom Baylis.
Soclal XI player of the year
The winner for being an ever present and much improved bowler was Nick “Mad Dog” Madley. Apparently the award was unrelated to Nick's batting.
Women’s XI player of the year
For always turning up, for always giving 100%, for stepping in as captain and for her outstanding fielding efforts was Nicola Tavender.
Club cup
It was reassuring to see how many people were suggested for the club cup especially given our reliance on volunteers.
It was too close to call this year so there were joint and very deserved winners…
Hugh Taggart for his contributions as Treasurer, Sunday XI skipper, CRGT representative and groundsman.
Andy Gilchrist for his contributions to the U15 boys team including being team manager, scorer and running their coaching sessions throughout the season.
Fielding cup
if you’ve watched some of our games then you would be forgiven for questioning why we bother with a fielding award. Perhaps that’s why the cup is the smallest as the likelihood of it being dropped is quite high.
There were however some players who performed well in the field. Luke Webb, Hugh Taggart and Jefe Cervello are all notable mentions but the winner with 13 dismissals, both in the field and behind the stumps, was Tommy Sapsed.
T20 cup
Nicky Ison and Ross Davies were the 2 clear favourites but with 13 wickets for 48 runs in just 14 overs, the winner was Ross Davies.
Batting cup
The decision was unanimous. Over a 100 hundred league runs more than the nearest contender and in fewer innings. He was also involved in a number of instrumental partnerships in key games. With 2 x 50’s, a top score of 95 and a total of 333 league runs in the season, the winner was Jake Murray.
Bowling cup
The bowling cup was hotly contested with 7 players taking 15 or more wickets across the sides. However, 18 league wickets, in 68 overs, with best figures of 5 for 30 and a hat-trick secured the bowling cup for Nicky Ison.
Player’s player of the year
There were a large number of players who made significant contributions throughout the season and the “shortlist” had 10 names on it!
The runner-up was Jon Law, who was the leading wicket-taker in the Sunday side, with 15 wickets. A fantastic achievement Sherriff and a great example to all.
The player with the most votes and well-deserved winner was Jake Murray.
President’s Champagne Moment
Club president, Steve Salmon, outlined a few contenders for his champagne moment of the season. One of them may lead to the wearing of helmets in the field in the event of dropped catches. Sandy Mackay got 2 mentions. One for a stunning one-handed catch but the other which was taking the wicket of Saturday 1st XI skipper, Luke Webb (playing for the oppo), won the bottle of bubbly for Sandy.
