Passing of a club stalwart and true gentleman

We are very sad to announce the death of Dick (Dickie) Murphy as a result of a brain aneurysm last week. He was a stalwart of Claygate CC for many years.

Dick joined Claygate nearly three decades ago and was an all-rounder who could be relied upon to make runs anywhere in the batting order. He was also a very competent off-spinner who took wickets regularly and bowled many many tight spells.

He captained the Saturday 1st XI, 2nd XI and Sunday sides, played in a number of the club's overseas tours over the last 25 years and also played Surrey Seniors until the last couple of years.

He was one of the Dear family who have been such an important part of Claygate’s history. He will be remembered as a true gentleman and a kind and loving member of his family. He leaves Kathleen, who has been at the ground on many occasions - the most recent of which was for the Grace Dear charity game last July.

Our condolences to Kathleen, son Richard, daughter Lisa and all the family .
